UK firm designs record breaker

UK-based Adrian Fisher Design has designed a record-breaking attraction in Ningbo, China, which is opening the world’s largest hedge maze.

The Maze of the Butterfly Lovers, which opened on  22nd April 2017, set two new world records.  Staff from the Guinness Book of World Records were at the opening ceremony to present an official certificate recognising the achievement.  Firstly, it is the largest hedge maze in the world by area, covering 33,565 square metres and, secondly, it is the hedge maze with the longest length of paths, with a total of 8,375 metres.

The inspiration for the maze design is the famous Chinese story of the Butterfly Lovers.  Within the maze, which traces the shape of two butterflies, visitors come across aspects of the story.  Paths cross above and below each other using a dozen towers, bridges and underpasses. The highlight is the central tower, where twin spiral staircases allow visitors to ascend and spiral upwards towards the sky.

“We all love mazes, from our earliest exploration of what is out of sight, to the fun of solving puzzles,” said Adrian Fisher, designer of the maze.  “Mazes are one of the finest ways of sharing an adventure together, making choices, and discovering things we never imagined.”

The firm will be exhibiting at the Asian Attractions Expo from 14th to 16th June at the Shanghai New Expo Centre.
