Some 27 hotel waterparks are scheduled to open by year end 2017 compared to 28 that opened in 2016 and only 14 that opened in 2015, according to figures from JLC Hospitality Consulting.
The report said: “The record year was 2007 when 40 new hotel waterparks opened. As the recession hit, new openings started to dwindle and a lot of construction moved overseas. Nevertheless, the hotel waterpark resort industry in the US has shown sustained growth over the last decade, with growth rates between 5.8 per cent and 10.1 per cent annually since 2010. We are now seeing more than 20 projects open annually due to new construction, expansions, acquisitions and renovations.”
